How to Put a QR Code on a Flyer: Layout Tips

By Qrenzo · 5 min read ·

Putting a QR code on a flyer is easy. Making sure people scan it takes a little layout care. These tips cover where to put the code, how big to make it and what to keep clear around it.

Where to place a QR code on a flyer

  • Near the bottom or the centre, after the headline, so people read your message first and then scan.
  • Away from the folded edges and the outer margin, where printers can trim or crease the code.
  • Where the eye ends up, not hidden in a corner behind other graphics.

QR code layout basics

  1. Put the code on a plain white square, even if the flyer is coloured.
  2. Leave a blank border around it, about four dots wide, with no text or images touching it.
  3. Keep the code square. Never stretch it.
  4. Use dark dots on a light background, with strong contrast.
  5. Add one short instruction beside it, such as “Scan to see our menu”.

How big should the QR code be on a flyer?

For a flyer read at arm’s length, aim for at least about 2 to 3 cm, and larger if the link is long, because long links make denser codes. For a poster read from further away, scale up. See what size a QR code should be for a simple distance rule.

Keep the rest of the flyer simple

Your name or logo, a short headline, the QR code and one line of text is usually enough. A busy design hides the code and makes people ignore it.

Use a ready-made flyer layout
