QR Code Flyer Design: 8 Tips for Better Scans

By Qrenzo · 5 min read ·

A QR code on its own is just a pattern. A good flyer tells people why they should scan it and makes scanning easy.

1. Tell people what they get

Add a short line such as “Scan to see our menu” or “Scan to leave a review”. People scan when the benefit is obvious and the effort is small.

2. Make the code big enough

Use at least about 2 cm for close scanning and more for distance. See what size a QR code should be.

3. Keep strong contrast

Dark code on a light background scans best. Put the code on a white panel even if the rest of the flyer is coloured.

4. Protect the margin

Leave a blank border around the code, about four dots wide. Do not let text, borders or images touch it.

5. Put it at a comfortable height

Place signs where people can scan without bending or stretching, roughly at chest or eye level, and where they are already waiting or standing.

6. Use matte paper

Glossy finishes reflect light and can make the code unreadable from some angles. Matte paper or matte lamination is safer.

7. Keep the design simple

Your name, a short headline, the code and a one-line instruction is enough. Clutter distracts from the action you want.

8. Test the printed copy

Scan the real printout with two or three phones in the place it will hang. Fix any problem before you print a hundred copies. Qrenzo gives you four designs that follow these rules by default.

A quick design checklist

  • One clear call to action next to the code.
  • Code on a white panel with a clear margin.
  • Large enough for the distance people will scan from.
  • Matte paper, printed at 100% size.
  • Tested on at least two phones before printing in bulk.
