What Can You Print a QR Code On?

By Qrenzo · 5 min read ·

You can print a QR code on almost any flat surface, as long as a phone camera can see the dots clearly. The surface matters less than contrast, size and a flat, clean finish.

Paper and card

Paper is the easiest place. It suits flyers, posters, business cards, receipts, menus and table cards. Use matte white paper, because glossy stock reflects light and can make scanning harder. See how to print a QR code for settings.

Stickers and labels

Stickers put a QR code on products, packaging and windows. Choose matte sticker paper indoors and waterproof vinyl outdoors or in kitchens. Read our guide to QR code stickers.

Signs and displays

  • Foam board, acrylic and metal signs work well when the code is printed in strong contrast.
  • Window vinyl works if the background behind the glass does not interfere with the code.
  • Avoid placing signs under direct lights where glare can wash out the dots.

Packaging and products

Boxes, bags and product labels are common places for QR codes. Put the code on the flattest area, away from folds, seams and curved edges, which distort the pattern and make it harder to scan.

Fabric, mugs and merchandise

A QR code can be printed on T-shirts, tote bags and mugs, but these surfaces stretch, curve or wrinkle. Make the code larger than usual, keep it on a flat area, and always test the finished item before ordering many.

What to avoid

  • Glossy, mirrored or heavily textured surfaces.
  • Low contrast, such as pale dots on a coloured or patterned background.
  • Very small codes, or codes cropped so the margin is missing.
  • Folds, creases and curved surfaces across the code.

Rules that work on any surface

  1. Keep dark dots on a light background with strong contrast.
  2. Leave a clear blank margin around the code.
  3. Make it big enough for the scanning distance. See what size a QR code should be.
  4. Test the finished print with two phones before you use it.
