QR Code Flyer Size: How Big Should the Code Be?
By Qrenzo · 5 min read ·
The right QR code size on a flyer depends on the flyer, the scanning distance and the length of the link. Here are sensible sizes to start with.
The minimum size for a QR code
A common minimum is about 2 cm (0.8 in) wide for scanning at arm’s length. Smaller codes need very short links and a good camera. When in doubt, go bigger.
Recommended sizes by flyer
- US Letter or A4 flyer: about 5 to 8 cm wide.
- A5 flyer: about 3 to 5 cm wide.
- A6 flyer or postcard: about 2.5 to 3.5 cm wide.
- Business card: about 2 to 2.5 cm wide.
These are starting points. Long links create denser codes, so make the code larger, or use a shorter link.
QR code on the back of a flyer
- Use heavier paper so the front design does not show through and disturb the code.
- Place the code on a plain white square with a clear margin.
- Put a short instruction beside it, such as “Scan for our menu”.
- Keep it away from the folded edge.
Keep the margin
Leave a blank border about four dots wide around the code. Qrenzo adds this on a white panel automatically.
Print at 100% and test
Choose Actual size when you print, and scan the printout with two phones. See QR code on a flyer: layout tips and what size a QR code should be.
Examples
- A restaurant Letter flyer with a short menu link: about 6 cm works well.
- A salon A5 flyer with a Google review link: about 4 cm is enough if the link is short.
- An A6 handout with a long link: increase to about 3.5 cm, or shorten the link.
Always scan a printed proof, because paper, ink and lighting change how a code reads in real life.
